About the Owner
Josefa Aguasvivas was born on August 17, 1950 in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic. She studied elementary school, middle school, and high school with a focus on physical science, mathematics, and natural science.
In 1968, she started working at the the Rehabilitation Center as a physical therapist assistant after completing an accelerated training program designed to help treat the large number of patients with polio following an outbreak in the country. In 1970, she traveled to Mexico City to study at the Mexican Institute of Rehabilitation.
She later returned to the Dominican Republic to work as a physical therapist, reaching the rank of deputy director of the Department of Physical Therapy at the Rehabilitation Center over the course of her 15 years of service. Between 1980 and 1982, she participated in the opening of the first physical therapy school in the Dominical Republic at the Santo Domingo Technological Institute, where she taught Therapeutic Exercises I-II and Therapeutic Massage.
Therapeutic massage was always an area of special interest to Ms. Aguasvivas because of its important role in alleviating pain. Between 1984 and 1987, she served as director of the Institute’s Health Club, under Dr. Iselso Gonzalez, who currently serves as the Director of Physical Medicine at the Dr. Luis Aybar Hospital in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
In 1987, Ms. Aguasvivas emigrated to the U.S. with her husband. In 1989, they were joined by their daughter and two sons, who were educated in the U.S. For various reasons, Ms. Aguasvivas was unable to practice her profession as a physical therapist. Shifting her focus slightly, she earned her CMT and began working as a massage therapist.
In 2002, she worked with Chiropractor Dr. House. In 2006, Ms. Aguasvivas founded the “Vivas Salon and Spa,” today known as the “Vivas Spa,” offering a wide variety of spa treatments including facials, therapeutic massage, cavitations, post surgical massage, etc. Her hope is to continue using her considerable experience to help her clients with pain management and recovery.
Ms. Aguasvivas is grateful to God first and foremost; to her husband and her three children for offering their support over the last few years of her career; and to her clients who have steadfastly supported her throughout her career.
